Therapy that goes beyond talking
Talking can be an important part of therapy. Words help to signal what we have conscious awareness of, and using words can help us to reflect, to communicate, to make sense, and to identify choices.
Why is it, then, that words alone aren't enough to bring about change - even when change is so desperately wanted?
Human experience involves more than words. Our patterns of body language and feeling are shaped by our experiences in the world. They have much to tell us that we'd do well to interpret into words, if we can learn to listen through the language of our senses.
Therapy can help by shining a light on what's outside of your awareness, and lending attuned support as you grapple to find words and make meaning of what you discover.
In practice, this means I might invite you to explore your experience through art, imagery, metaphor, breath, or movement: all ways to become curious about what might be beneath conscious thought.
These aren't techniques you need to be good at, and there's no expectation to participate in anything that doesn't feel right. We'll work collaboratively, paying attention to what feels useful, what doesn't, and what begins to shift.
Who does this approach work well for?
What you share in therapy is held in confidence, and without judgement. You might be considering therapy because:
-
You don't feel ready or able to open up to the people in your life.
-
You find it hard to understand or express what you're feeling.
-
You find yourself repeating unwanted patterns in relationships.
-
You want to feel differently than you do right now.
If you notice a sense of curiosity reading this description: this reflective, experiential style of therapy may be a good fit for you.
You don't need to arrive with a clear idea or explanation. We can begin with whatever feels possible to bring.
You're welcome to email me with questions, or to schedule a free, no obligation introduction call via Counselling Directory.
